Comprehensive Cross-Border Guidance: United States & Canadian Healthcare
Cross-border prescription medication transit between Canada and the United States is strictly governed under both Health Canada PODSA regulations and the US FDA Personal Importation Policy (PIP). While American visitors, cross-border commuters, snowbirds, and dual citizens frequently seek prescription transfers in British Columbia, medications can only be legally dispensed pursuant to an order from a physician or nurse practitioner licensed within Canada. Under US FDA guidelines, individuals may not import prescription drugs into the US unless they are for personal use, generally do not exceed a 90-day supply, are not available domestically, and do not represent an unreasonable health risk. All narcotics, benzodiazepines, and controlled substances are strictly prohibited from international export.
